Pierpaolo Piccioli’s Valentino collection had day to day clothes outnumbering eveningwear in this show, which was a novelty for the Italian fashion house. This change is result of one of the many covid era impacts that are so visible in every area of business of fashion. Having said that, covid has only accelerated existing changes in the consumer behavior – customers leaning more and more towards comfort over glamour. With less red carpet events going on it is no surprise that the collection was full of practical day to day key pieces.
This show was also representing a new era of minimalism.
Pierpaolo Piccioli has shown some impressive architectural and mathematical skills in creation of the looks. Structures, shapes and cuts of the trench coats, pants, jackets and skirts have continued into each other seamlessly creating chic and very modern silhouettes completed by moulded shoulders, flying panels and immense platforms. It was all about shapes and dimensions.
Minimalist style of the collection has been diluted with occasional pops of neon colors, which were in unusual combination with warm nude and gold tones. There were quite a few beautiful party dresses in bright colors that lighted up the seriousness of the collection.
It seems like Pierpaolo Piccioli is eager to bring a lot of change to the brand. He has also included menswear to the Haute Couture show, which was another first for Valentino.
However this doesn’t mean that the traditional Valentino elements will be lost. It is more of an extension of the brands capabilities, rather than change in the direction – the collection still had the traditional touches of the brand –opera gloves, cape dresses, rich sequin embroidery and many other elements.
