The Royal Fashion of Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge. (3) Iconic Wedding Dress

10th wedding anniversary of Prince William and Kate Middleton is bringing back the memories from the most spectacular event of British monarchy and probably the entire world. The Ceremony has been watched by around 2 billion people all over the world and is often referred to as Wedding of the Century. Needless to say the Royal Wedding has also been a huge fashion event.

The Bride

Regardless of having world class celebrities and international style icons as guests, Kate Middleton’s wedding dress was the absolute center of attention. The wedding dress along with the dress she worn for the announcement of their engagement with Prince William made a great start for Duchess in fashion world: she immediately became a worldwide style icon and fashion influencer. But this was only beginning of her journey. During ten years as a senior member of royal family and one of the most scrutinized women in the world, she continues to raise the bar, turning her fashion choices to a powerful tool of communication and influence.

Alexander Mc Queen

Kate’s gown was created by Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen, and the Duchess worked closely with Burton on the details of the dress.

In a statement on William and Kate’s wedding day The Palace revealed that:  “Miss Middleton wished for her dress to combine tradition and modernity with the artistic vision that characterizes Alexander McQueen’s work.”

This was a start of the long term relationship between Duchess and the brand. Alexander McQueen has been the go to choice of the Duchess for many important engagements and most of her memorable looks are from this fashion house.  Duchess apparently took c close part in the process of designing the gown, and the two women developed strong relationship in process.

Alexander Mc Queen has also created the second wedding gown of Kate for the wedding reception, as well as the dress of the world’s most famous maid of honor – Pippa Middleton.

The Dress

  • Estimated cost of the dress is around $434,000.
  • Kate’s train was nearly nine-feet-long.
  • The style of the dress was a nod to Victorian era and set a trend for vintage dresses
  • The dress become largely popular and still remains so even after 10 years. The impact was so great that many celebrities refer to Kate’s iconic look as reference for their wedding dress designs. Kim Kardashian, Jacqueline Jossa, Nicky Hilton are the most famous brides, who’s dresses are believed to be inspired by the Duchess’s
  • The dress went on display at Buckingham Palace in 2011.
  • The gown has hand-cut lace roses, daffodils, thistles, and shamrocks woven into the sleeves themselves to symbolize England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.

Accessories:

Kate’s Tiara was borrowed from the Queen, it was her Cartier Tiara also know as Cartier Scroll Tiara.

Kate’s bouquet featured myrtle, lily-of-the-valley, hyacinth, and sweet William – probably in honor of the groom. According to the statement from the Palace the sprig of myrtle came from the same plant used in Queen Elizabeth’s wedding bouquet back in 1947. The tradition of a royal bride carrying myrtle in her wedding bouquet dates back to Queen Victoria’s era and been followed by royal brides ever since.

The earrings of the Duchess was a gift from her parents and paid tribute to the Middleton family crest. Robinson Pelham designed the stylized oak leaves with diamond pave acorns which symbolized the trees in Berkshire where the Middleton family lived.

The wedding ring of Kate, which was once Princess Diana’s engagement ring is one of the most famous and most photographed pieces of jewelry in the world. The ring is made up of a 12-carat oval blue sapphire, 14 solitaire diamonds and set in 18K white gold, and is worth estimated $500,000.
