Princess Diana’s Fashion (3) Favorite Brands

July 1, 2021

While the world is celebrating 60th birthday of iconic Princess Diana, let’s remember her main fashion moments and the brands that were closest to her heart.

Catherine Walker

If we had to choose one favorite brand of Diana, it would be undoubtedly Catherine Walker.

During her years with Royal Family Diana has worn over 500 designs by this label. Diana played a big role in popularization of the brand which founded in 70s and reached peak in 80s 90s.

Many of her most iconic looks also belong to this brand:

  • Her beloved pearl dress also known as “Elvis dress”
  • Strapless / one shoulder embroidered evening gowns in pastels
  • Crisp suits by Catherine Walker became staples in what was considered Diana’s “work wardrobe.” Catherine walker suits of Diana were also known as “power suits”

Catherine Walker happens to be one of the favorites of Kate Middleton. In her short time with Royal family Meghan also picked a few looks from Catherine Walker including her favorite green cape dress on Commonwealth Day in 2020, at their last engagement with Prince harry as “senior royals”.

Dior

Another brand whose collaboration with lady Di was very famous was Dior. The impact that Princess Diana had on the brands was enormous, hence the famous Dior bag that she used to carry regularly was named after her: “Lady Dior” by the fashion house. Another tribute to Princess Diana was the model called “Dior Chouchou” who was in her honor.

Along with iconic Lady Di Dior bag, another famous collaboration was Princess Diana’s surprise visit to Met Gala in 1996, where she wore one of her most famous looks: Midnight blue satin slip dress designed by John Galliano himself. It was Galliano’s very first couture collection and what a start it was for him! The dress has made it to countless cover pages all over the world and continues to be in the fashion magazines till today.

The choice of this dress, not so characteristic for royal ladies shows one more time the fashion forward attitude of Princess Diana and how ahead of time she was.

Versace

Versace was in the list of favorite Princess Diana brands. She has worn Versace on variance of occasions, from daily suits, to evening gowns. Her relationship with Versace was probably another broken royal protocol as Royals have been known to be giving preference to English brands.

Diana has developed warm and close relationship with Gianni Versace and released a statement after his sad passing: ‘I am devastated by the loss of a great and talented man’.

Diana has worn more Versace looks in 90s, as she was gaining more freedom which was also reflected in her fashion choices.

Few of Diana’s most famous Versace looks were the blue embellished dress for the cover of Harpers Bazaar and one shoulder blue silk gown for the charity ball in Sydney in 1996.

Jacques Azauri and Bruce Oldfield were also in the list of favorite designers of Princess Diana. The brands have created custom made gowns for the Princess for numerous occasions.
